One of the main highlights of the iOS 11 was the introduction to ARKIT, a technology that allows users to create augmented reality using their Apple handset, i.e. iPhone and iPad. Well owing to this particular technology coupled with Apple Maps now you can take virtual reality tours over a handful of cities. The only catch (if we might call it) is that you’ll only be able to experience flyover tours in VR mode in the Apple Maps on iPhone and iPad that runs the all new iOS 11. In this post, we have put up a step-by-step guide on how you can experience virtual reality in iOS 11 Apple Maps.
Steps to Take Flyover Tours Using Apple Maps in iOS 11
First off, the flyover tours in iOS 11 can be taken on only 300 cities. ARKit works on only Apple A9 and A10 processor that powers iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone SE and iPad Pro. Now if you own any of the above and are using the beta version of iOS 11, you should be able to follow these steps pretty easily.
Step 1: Open ‘Apple Map’ on your Apple device
Step 2: In the screen that appears, you should be able to see a search bar where you will need to put the name of the city where you want to go for a virtual reality flyover tour.
Step 3: If you have typed ‘New York City’ then a map of the city should pop up, and in the bottom left corner of the page, you should be able to see a ‘Flyover’ button. Hit that.
Step 4: Now another page appears where you will see a ‘Start city tour’ at the bottom of the page. Tap on it. Only after that, you should be able to take a virtual reality tour in iOS 11 Apple Maps of the city.
Pro Tip: If you can’t see the Start City Tour’ button all, you’ll need to bring up the information card and tap on it. If you want to abandon the tour, or simply want to pause it and resume it later, hit the “Pause/Resume Tour” button at the bottom of the page. To end the tour entirely hit the “X” button that appears beside the name of the city.
Thanks to the all new ARKit, the future of augmented reality technology looks bright. The only catch we came across while experiencing virtual reality in iOS 11 Apple Maps was the steady depletion of battery.
